Nicklaus Set For Masters

Jack Nicklaus is expected to join Arnold Palmer for Palmer's
farewell Masters trip. Nicklaus wasn't thrilled with finish-
ing 36th in last week's Toshiba Senior Classic in Newport
Beach, Calif., but said the performance was encouraging
enough for him to play in the season's first major champion-
ship in two weeks. "More than likely, I will play," Nicklaus
said Sunday at Newport Beach Country Club. "I came here with
the attitude that unless something disastrous happened, I
was probably going to decide to play, and I probably will
play now." This will be the 44th appearance at Augusta
National for Nicklaus, a six-time Masters champion. Since
making his debut in 1959, he has missed only two Masters:
in 1999 and 2002. Nicklaus repeatedly has said he doesn't
want to play in the Masters if he didn't think he could be
competitive. At Newport Beach, he shot rounds of 71-70-69.
"I did a lot of good things and I did a lot of bad things,
and enough of it was good that it gave me a positive feeling,"
Nicklaus said. "I can't imagine not playing (in the Masters)
at this point unless I hurt myself or something." Palmer
will be playing in his 50th and final Masters.
